DESCRIPTION: Spedox (Doxycycline Hydrochloride) is a member of tetracycline group of drugs. It is bacteriostatic and effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria. It also inhabits Mycoplasma, Coxiella, Chlamydia and some Protozoa.
ACTION AND PHARMACOLOGY: Spedox is most efficiently absorbed from the gut and about 80-90% is bound to plasma proteins. Half life is about 15 hours, it is excreted in faeces and urine. It has got excellent penetration in most fluids and tissues. It acts by binding to 3OS ribosomes in susceptible microorganisms, inhibiting the protein synthesis. Milk, nonsystemic antacids and iron retards the absorption.
MICROBIOLOGY: Spedox is highly active against Bacillus Anthracis, Bordetella, Brucella, Escherichia Coli, Haemophilus, Klebsielia staphylococci, Stretococci, Mycoplasma, Entamoeba histolytica, Trichomnas vaginalis, Treponema Pallidum certain Rickettsias and Viruses.
ADVERSE SIDE EFFECTS: Gastrointestinal irritation, photosensitivity, nausea, epigastric distress, vomiting, skin rash, tooth discoloration, liver damage, Superinfection
CONTRA-INDICATIONS:Hypersensitivity to the drug
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:In children less than 8 years, liver dysfunction.
USAGE IN PREGNANCY and LACTATION:Contraindicated
INDICATIONS: Infection due to susceptible pathogens specially the chronic infection. Also for most of sexually transmitted diseases. Respiratory, Genito urinary ENT infections. Lymphogranuloma venererum, trachoma, atypical pneumonia, cholera, rickettsial infections, brucellosis, dental, gynaecological and opthalmic infections.
USUAL DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Adults: 200 to 600 mg/day Children: 5 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 12-hour. Children below 8 yrs should not be given this drug. |
