MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Clavulanic Acid protects amoxycillin from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes. Hence it extends the antibiotic spectrum of amoxycillin to include many bacteria normally resistant to amoxycillin. Amoxycillin exerts its action by inhibiting the bacterial cell wall synthesis.

PHARMACOKINETICS:
After oral administration amoxycillin and clavulanic acid are well absorbed from GIT. Clavulanic acid does not affect the absorpion of amoxycillin. The plasma protein binding of clavulanic acid is approximately 20%. Both drugs diffuse rapidly into most tissues and fluids of body with the exception of brain. The plasma half-life of amoxycillin is 1.3 hours and of clavulanic acid is 1 hour. Approximately 50-70% of amoxycillin and 20-40% of clavulanic acid excreted unchanged in urine during the first 6 hours of oral administration.

Onset of Action: 1-2 hours.
