DESCRIPTION: Cefadroxil is a Cephalosporin. The advantage of the combining it with probenecid is slowing tubular excretion of CEFADROXIL and thus prolonging the half-life to raise the antibiotic level and thus enhancing efficacy.
MECHANISM OF ACTION: It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and is bactericidal. Also the autolytic enzymes in cell wall may be activated leading to bacterial death. Cephalosporin after administration is widely distributed throughout body fluids. Cephalosporin is primarily excreted by the kidneys and dosage should be altered in patients of renal disease. It is important to note that patients who have shown immediate type hypersensitivity reaction to Penicillin should receive cephalosporin with great caution.
PHARMACOKINETICS: After oral administration, Probenecid is completely absorbed. It is metabolized and the metabolites also have uricosuric action.
Onset of Action: 30-60 min.
Duration of Action: 12 to 16 hours
ADVERSE EFFECTS: Nausea, epi-gastric distress, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, urticaria, genital pruritus, pseudomembranous colitis and genital moniliasis.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS:Colitis renal dysfunction
PREGNANCY :Use with extreme caution, weighing benefits and possible hazard to foetus.
LACTATION:Use with caution
ELDERLY: May be used with caution
INTERACTION:Aminoglycosides (Gentamycin, Tobramycin ) - Nephrotoxicity of aminoglycosides potentiated.
Oral anticoagulatnts: Hypoprothrobinaemic effect potentiated, bleeding complications may occur.
Bacteriostatic Agents like Chloramphenicol : Decreases efficacy of Cefadroxil.
Probenecid: Slows tubular excretion of CEFADROXIL and this enhances efficacy.
Frusemide & Ethacrynic Acid:
Potentiate Nephrotoxicity of Cefadroxil.
Urine Glucose: False positive with Benedicts solution and Fehlings solution.
Direct Coomb's test: False positive.
Urinary 17-Ketosteroid values: Falsely elevated values.
INDICATIONS: Soft tissue and skin infection caused by staphylococci or streptococci, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, Otitis media and urinary tract infection. ENT infections, osteomyelitis.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Adults: 1 to 2 tablets 1-2 times daily. Children: Not recommended.
INSTRUCTIONS: Tablet is to be dispersed in water. |
